The British supercar maker announced the launch of a six-year ‘Track 22’ business plan that will transform their model range via the use of electrification.
McLaren will invest £1 billion in Research and Development over the next six years to offer at least half of their models with hybrid technology, with a fully electric Ultimate Series model being under evaluation.
The plan also includes the introduction of 15 all-new cars and derivatives. After the debut of the new 570GT at the Geneva Motor Show, McLaren confirmed that a Spider version of the Sport Series is also coming in 2017.
McLaren also announced that the ‘LT’ nameplate will become a permanent track-focused sub-brand in their range, following the positive reception of the 675LT Coupe and Spider models.
“This (the new business plan) will see us launch 15 all-new cars or derivatives within our existing Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series families,” said Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive CEO. “We will also develop an all-new engine architecture that will debut towards the end of the Business Plan period.”
“Our next hybrid vehicle will launch towards the latter part of our six year plan, and we will see at least 50 percent featuring hybrid technology by 2022. Hybridisation has obvious CO2 and fuel consumption advantages but for us, it is all about delivering the performance and enjoyment of a McLaren.”
“But we won’t stop there. Our engineers have even started work on a one-off prototype to evaluate the possible benefits of a fully-electric powertrain in an Ultimate Series car; such is the pace of development,” Flewitt concluded.
