We’ve been hearing rumors about an upcoming Maybach SUV for a year now, with company’s officials talking about it in every given opportunity.
It’s only natural for Mercedes wanting to try their luck in the soon-to-be-formed ultra-luxurious SUV segment.
The Bentley Bentayga is already here, so is the Maserati Levante, Lamborghini is working on the production version of the Urus, Rolls Royce is testing its Project Cullinan and even Aston Martin is developing their first crossover based on the DBX concept.
This time, Ola Källenius, Mercedes’ board member talked to Top Gear hinting once again at a Maybach super-crossover. “Could we do an SUV? I wouldn’t rule it out”, he said. “I can’t see us doing it with the current platform, so if we would do it, it would have to be based upon the next generation platform”.
Mercedes has been enjoying great success after the relaunch of the Maybach nameplate, slapping the badge on long-wheelbase S-Classes which occupy the upper end of their price list. Right now Mercedes’ Chinese customers are buying more S-Class Maybachs in a month than it used to sell in its best year worldwide of the old Maybach brand.
With the crossover trend going strong, there is absolutely no reason why Mercedes shouldn’t make a Maybach SUV, especially after the big market hit of the S-Class. And since the recipe so far works as a charm, we can be pretty sure that the next GLS model will gain a posher Maybach version.
