It seems that Mercedes-Benz won’t be the only manufacturer to join the pickup truck class in the near future.
Speaking at the launch of the new Peugeot Expert and Citroen Jumpy vans in France, Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat announced that tissegment is a good “opportunity” of growth for PSA Peugeot Citroen, according to .
“We always consider the pick-up market as an opportunity, it’s part of our history. We’re thinking about it. We update our group strategy on Tuesday, 5th April, and we’ll mention which cars we will be targeting. I will be able to reveal more then“, Picat said.
While details on a possible pickup truck coming from Peugeot Citroen remain in the dark for now, it seems unlikely that they would develop one alone. Chances are PSA will reveal a joint venture with either Toyota, with which it is building the Proace as a sibling to the Jumpy and Expert, or with Fiat, which whom it is working on the Ducato, Boxer and Jumper, as Autocar reports.
The last pickup truck offered by the PSA brand in Europe was the 504, which stayed on the market until the early 1990s. If it will eventually happen, then such a vehicle will go up against the Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200 and Volkswagen Amarok. Other manufacturers that have similar models in the pipeline are Renault, Fiat and Mercedes-Benz.
