It’s not that hard to understand why Abarth’s latest model – the 124 Spider – got the majority of petrolheads drooling all over it; basically it’s the MX-5 everybody wanted to see (and probably buy). But enough with the day-dreaming, because now you can build your own through the maker’s online configurator.
Okay, the £29,565/€40.000 (equal to $44,882) starting price is a little steep, but the little 1.4-litre turbocharged roadster comes with a plethora of kit to make the average car lover take a big interest in it.
Available in two trims for the UK market, the standard Spider variant comes with a body-colored bonnet and boot-lid, as opposed to the matte black Spider Heritage version. There’s no performance or price difference between them, whilst it appears that the rest of the Old Continent will get only the latter variant, for now.
Weighing only 1,060 kg (2,336 lbs), evenly distributed on the axles for a perfect 50:50 split, the automobile bears a power-to-weight-ratio of 6.2 kg/HP thanks to the 170PS output, which thrusts it to 100km/h (62mph) from standstill in 6.8 seconds.
The 124 Spider is available in either 6speed manual or automatic gearboxes, and has 5 color variants to choose from (although it comes as standard only in red). Instead of the mundane 4 speaker audio system, the model can be commissioned with a Bose 9+1 unit, but besides that, everything almost comes “on the house” for the Spider Heritage: air conditioning, Performance Suspension, performance steering wheel, air conditioning, and the list goes on and on.
If you want to build your own, you can head out to Abarth’s online configurator.
