Ford gained the rights to use the name “Model E” a couple of years ago, after it successfully fought efforts by Tesla Motors to secure the moniker on what we now know as the Model 3.
With the Hyundai Ioniq in its sight, we now learn that Ford plans to use the nameplate on an upcoming vehicle, which will be offered as an EV, PHEV and hybrid, as GreenCarReports says.
Based on the same compact architecture as the next-gen Ford Focus, the Model E is believed to gain a dedicated body and, besides joining the firm’s family of green cars, it will also serve a replacement for the Focus Electric, C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid.
Ford will reportedly start producing the Model E in 2019, at its new factory in Mexico. The facility is part of a $1.6 billion investment and it will have an estimated annual capacity of 300,000 to 350,000 cars, out of which, the Model E is expected to account for around 50,000 units, once it starts production in 2019, one year after the first cars will roll off the assembly line.
The automaker hasn’t announced what vehicles will be built south of the US border, but one of them is expected to be the next-gen Focus compact sedan and hatchback, which should move to Mexico from Wayne, Michigan, as the latter will be converted to produce crossovers, SUVs and trucks.
