Mercedes-AMG’s high-performance GT coupe will gain three new members, over the next couple of years.
Joining the likes of the already available GT and GT S, will be a hardcore model named GT R. It will target the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the McLaren 570S/570 GT with the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found in its two siblings, but upgraded from the current 510 PS (503 HP), in the GT S, to up to around 570 horsepower.
Mods will continue underneath the more aggressively kitted body, as the coupe will gain four-wheel steering and it will go on a diet to shed up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Mercedes-AMG will produce the GT R at the Sindelfingen factory, in Germany, where it will be assembled alongside the GT and GT S.
Details remain scarce, but the Germans will reportedly pull the covers off this summer, possibly at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in June
Development of the GT family will not end with the GT R, as a GT Black Series is expected in 2017, as Autocar reports, without providing any data on the car. However, this model will sit at the top of the range, in terms of price and performance, while the lineup will be completed by the GT Roadster, in 2018.
