The most hardcore sports car in Mercedes-AMG’s lineup promises to set a new benchmark for the high performance division.
Caught on camera a few times, the Mercedes-AMG GT-R will be better overall than the SLS AMG Black Series and it will have the Porsche 911 GT3 RS in its sight, according to Drive, who spoke with the firm’s chief, Tobias Moers, at the New York Auto Show.
“The GT-R stands for being better than SLS Black. It’s faster on a track than the SLS Black. This gives us a clear indication that there will be no slowing down with our products“, the AMG boss said.
While its exact specs are still unknown, it has been confirmed that the GT-R will adopt four-wheel steering, active aerodynamics and it will go through a severe diet, shedding up to 100 kg (220 lbs) from its total weight, compared to the regular GT, on which is based.
These mods will add up to the extra oomph squeezed from the 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine, which should produce close to 600 HP. Mercedes-AMG is expected to preview the new AMG GT-R at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed in June.
The AMG GT family will reportedly continue to expand, as Moers hinted towards a Black Series variant, too, along with a four-door version to go Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide hunting: “There is still room for other companions in the family. Let’s wait a little. By the end of the year you’ll know a little bit more about.”
