From a performance standpoint, the world of Corvettes is now governed by the 6.2litre, 650HP, supercharged LT4 Z06 model. But that will change.
The C7 Z06 is, for now, the most powerful production car in GM’s history, eclipsing the previous C6 ZR1 by 12 HP and 46 ft-lb (39 Nm) of torque.
In all likelihood, it will not remain on top of the food chain for too long, as Autoblog reports that General Motors filed a trademark application for the “ZR1” moniker on May 16th at the US Patent and Trademark Office seeking the rights to use it for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles”.
Not that difficult to deduce that a more powerful C7 ‘Vette is on its way. There is a slight chance, however, that the nameplate will be used for the rumored mid-engined “Zora” C8.
Throughout Chevy’s history, the ZR1 name was reserved for the most powerful models produced, beginning with the special engine package for the C3, continuing with the hyphened ZR-1 C4, and ending with the almighty 638 HP C6 in 2013.
