With 620 PS and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque on tap, Porsche’s old 997 GT2 RS can still be the stuff of nightmares for a great number of modern-day supercars.
It weighed 70 kg (150 lbs) less than the standard GT2 (a downright ferocious car in its own right) and it all amounted to a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of just 3.5 seconds, plus a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph), which today would match the 911 Turbo S’ straight line ability.
If you’re curious how the GT2 RS, a car that’s now 6 years old, compares to Porsche’s most track-focused 911 of today’s world, this drag race will clarify things and might even give you some idea of what would happen on a racing circuit.
To put things in perspective, the 991 GT3 RS is good for 500 HP, 460 Nm (339 lb-ft), and will accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds before maxing out at 310 km/h (192 mph). This car is so quick, it went round the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 20 seconds. However, the GT2 RS was two seconds quicker according to Nurburgringlaptimes.
The extra power makes it easier for the GT2 RS to eat up those fast straights and if you’re racing the two cars against each other in a straight line, you can pretty much expect the same result every time.
That’s not to say that watching them battle isn’t spectacular. In fact, they both look and sound unbelievable in this video and you can even get a sense of how fast they’re going.
