The Germans are replacing the button-infested center console of the Cayenne with a much cleaner touch-sensitive panel.

Our spies managed to take a peek at the inside of a 2018 Porsche Cayenne development mule which was wearing the current model’s body on top of the MLB platform.

Porsche opted for a much bigger display for the infotainment system, with the size of the screen estimated between 12 and 13 inches. The air vents have moved underneath the infotainment’s display while there is also a new design for the gear shifter that could suggest a new gearbox, with some rumors talking about a new eight-speed dual-clutch unit.

The center console incorporates the controls for air-conditioning, the audio system, the heated seats, the stability control and others, with the company leaving very few physical buttons for the most basic of the controls and the rest of them being touch operated, a style first introduced in the 918 Spyder hypercar. Porsche might also add features like gesture control.

The gauges behind the steering wheel are a combination of a digital display with a centrally mounted analogue tachometer, a nod to the car’s driver-centric character.

The company is also currently developing new turbocharged engines to be used in the new Cayenne and the new Panamera, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain also under development. The exterior is expected to take some cues from the styling of the smaller Macan, featuring similar slimmer taillights with a 3D lighting pattern.
