After adding the Model X and announcing a late 2017 launch for the Model 3, Tesla’s fourth model will enter a new, yet uncrowded, segment.

It stands to reason that Audi’s E-Tron Quattro concept previews something larger than the eventual Model Y, and so will possibly Mercedes’ all-electric ELC crossover, with Jaguar also looking to develop something similar.

The Model Y, which has already been confirmed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a tweet last year, would be based on the Model 3, but priced above it, mirroring the Model X’s relationship to the Model S.

If that’s the case, then its specs could also be similar, with a rear-wheel drive base spec version (AWD for the rest), Ludicrous mode and Autopilot self-driving technology as standard.

This render by RM Design is pretty much a Model 3 turned into a crossover. We’d prefer the actual car to have a more distinct personality, even if it lacks the Model X’s falcon wings rear doors; what say you?
