As far as cool cars go, this Porsche 924 Carrera GTR is right up there with the very best ones.
The GTR version of the 924 is considered the ultimate competition model of the series, with Porsche building just 17 of them back in 1981.
Nine of the GTR models are known to either have raced in or qualified at Le Mans. Other examples have raced in Europe, US and Japan but not the car we have here. This one-owner example has covered just 109km since new and is one of the two cars that were officially imported in Japan.
Spec-wise the 924 GTR comes equipped with a highly modified version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine making 375bhp and 299 lb-ft of torque. Combine this with a 930kg (2050 lbs) weight figure and what you are left with is a transaxle Porsche race car good enough for 180mph (290km/h), with 0-60mph taking 4.7 seconds.
The chassis is strengthened with an integrated roll cage, the suspension is fully adjustable and the brakes are four-piston items taken from the 935 on 310mm discs. The dramatic bodywork features Perspex headlight covers, a bonnet scoop and massive flared arches among others.
The car was never raced, with its owner having it carefully stored in his private collection. It was removed from storage each year though on a trailer to be serviced by a local Porsche specialist before it was placed back, with the engine getting started and run regularly. The owner even kept records of the small distance traveled, taking a handful of times on the track at Suzuka and the Fuji Speedway.
This is by far the most original and unmolested example you will find, and given its rarity too, it’s no wonder that it’s expected to demand really big money in the upcoming Silverstone Classic Race Car Sale on July 28th.
Let’s just hope the new owner will put some more miles on it!
