By the looks and sound of things, it turns out that Extra Gear host Chris Harris has a real knack for identifying supercars based only on what they sound like during start-up and revs.
Let’s face it, you have to drive a lot of different exotics in order to memorize exactly what they sound like the moment you turn that key or push that starter button. Sure, YouTube videos might help the casual enthusiast, but getting so close to nailing 4 out of 4 questions on your first try has to be genuinely difficult.
In reality, Harris only nailed 2.5 out of 4, but that’s only because a mobile phone isn’t going to always faithfully reproduce a noise, and sometimes you need a really keen ear in order to tell whether that high-pitched engined is from an Aventador or a Lexus LFA.
To his credit, he nailed the first one in about a split second, recognizing it as a Ferrari F12/FF. We figure that was thrown in there knowing that the man has a really personal connection with the car after purchasing a used FF back in 2014.
Another guess (highly calculated one we assume) he nailed was when he identified the sound of a 4.0-liter V8 belonging to a C63 Merc – though he needed to listen to it a few times before he could make a call.
Also, in his defense, it’s striking how similar the Lexus LFA sounds during peak revs to the Lamborghini Aventador, despite one having a 4.8-liter V10 and the other a more massive 6.5-liter V12.
