The reason why there are so many safety regulations in place during racing events is so that both the participants and the spectators don’t get hurt.
In some instances however, bad things do happen and it’s almost always because of human error.
This horrific accident took place during a motocross race in Honduras, were a 56-year old man attempted to cross the track at precisely the wrong time and ended up getting hit by a motorcyclist. As the video shows, he was then hit by another rider (possibly two more), both of whom went on to crash their bikes. The man unfortunately was pronounced dead at the scene.
As for the riders, they suffered injuries but were lucky to escape with their lives seen as how they were traveling at very high speeds and unlike with a MotoGP race, there isn’t much room for letting your bike slide from underneath you on a dirt track.
It’s tragic that these types of accidents still happen and that safety measures are what they are at venues such as this one. Staying off the track is obviously the safest way to prevent any type of harm in case you’re there to watch instead of race, but riders definitely need to protect themselves as well in these types of situations.
It’s hard to say if any of the participants that crashed could have done anything to avoid what happened.
