While Mercedes-AMG was lifting the veils off the hardcore AMG GT R at Goodwood, the NHTSA was issuing a recall for certain units of the GT S.
According to the recall summary of the problem, there are 136 units of the 2016 MY in the United States, manufactured from June 1, 2015, to July 24, 2015, which will have to be taken back to the dealers due to a possible driveshaft failure, which could lead to a loss of torque.
“In the affected vehicles, the adhesive bond between the carbon fiber driveshaft and the rear flange may fail, and as a result, there may be a loss of torque to the rear wheels“, the NHTSA wrote, highlighting that the driver “may experience deceleration if the vehicle is in motion“, which could “increase the risk of a crash.“
As usual, owners of the affected cars will be notified by the automaker of the condition and they will have to schedule an appointment with an authorized local dealer, which will inspect and, if necessary, replace the carbon fiber driveshaft, free of charge. The recall will kick off in June and the first replacements parts will become available on July 1.
The issue was discovered last October, when an US customer noticed “noises beneath his vehicle“, which resulted due to the separated connection between the driveshaft and flange. However, Daimler AG considered it to be “an individual stance“, but in the following two months, reports of two different cases of transmission malfunctions, with “scratching noises“, came from Saudi Arabia and Japan. Mercedes-Benz pointed the finger at the driveshaft supplier this February and further analysis led to the recall of the affected batch.
