Concerned enthusiasts have often raised questions on what will happen to an electric car under extreme situations, like flooding, but a recent video proves that a Tesla Model S is quite capable to face the challenge.
Shot in Kazakhstan, the footage shows the electric sedan plunge through a flooded tunnel, while other vehicles, powered by internal combustion engines, came to a full stop. Elon Musk himself viewed the video and showed his excitement in the car’s floating abilities, claiming that it can “turn into a boat for short periods of time”.
“We *def* don’t recommended this, but Model S floats well enough to turn into a boat for short periods of time. Thrust via wheel rotation“, wrote Tesla’s founder on Tweeter.
According to Electrek, the Model S’ battery pack is sealed, but driving it through flooded streets could lead to numerous issues and, furthermore, the warranty or insurance rarely cover this kind of damage. However, this could change in the future, as the man who bought James Bond’s submarine car three years ago, a modded Lotus Esprit, said that a sports sub car could hit the road as a side project.
“If curious abt TSWLM car, am still planning to do a sports sub car that can drive on roads. Just a side project. Limited market potential“, tweeted Musk.
