Even though Mercedes’ transformation of the A-Class from a mini-MPV into a compact hatchback was highly successful, there are still plenty of things to improve.
According to Auto Express, the 2018 model will address some of the current car’s issues, such as interior space and practicality.
The new A-Class will remain front-wheel drive and be underpinned by a revised version of the current MFA structure called MFA2. Its larger wheelbase will generate more space inside, while its reshaped rear should increase boot volume over today’s model. In terms of looks, Auto Express also expects headlamps with a new lighting signature, as well as new two-part light cluster taillights.
Bigger changes are expected inside, with a brand new cabin architecture designed to make the interior of the new A-Class more similar to that of the current C- and E-Class. The new premium hatch is said to have “far plusher materials, a simplified dash design and a larger digital display”. Also, the swivel wheel on the center console that controls the infotainment system will be replaced by a touchpad controller, just like the one found on larger Mercs. Last, but not least, a wide array of active and passive safety systems, such as Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, will be on offer.
