An ultra-rare Koenigsegg One:1 has sustained serious damage after crashing and catching on fire during testing at the notorious Nurburgring.

The Swedish marque recently confirmed that it would be returning to the ‘Ring after speed limits were lifted, in an attempt to set a new production car lap record. The crash occurred during a testing and set-up run, leaving the hypercar battered and bruised, resting on a patch of grass next to the circuit.

Details surrounding the crash aren’t completely clear but skid marks show that as the One:1 was in the Adeneuer Forst section of the track, the vehicle’s brakes locked up heading into a right hand corner. The car then appears to have smashed head-on into the guard rail before speaking over the top of it and landing on the grass. Evidently, the crash occurred at very high speed and soon after, the rear quarter panel caught fire but was soon extinguished.

While the car was severely damaged, the driver escaped without injury.

The One:1 in question was just the second of seven examples produced and was first shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2014. Wearing an exposed carbon fiber body with gold stripes, it is privately registered in Germany.

In a statement following the crash, Koenigsegg revealed on its website that the car will be rebuilt.

This is the second time a Koenigsegg has crashed during testing at ‘Green Hell’ as in late 2014, an Agera R prototype also slammed into a guard rail.
