The new 227 hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter engine of the Mazda CX-9 could find its way into the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3, following confirmation that it will fit in both models.
During the launch of the new CX-9, the company’s vehicle development engineer Dave Coleman said that the new engine is no larger than the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder found in other Mazda models.
“It fits in a lot of our cars, and where we’re actually going to put it is another question. It fits in the same package as the diesel fits in, and the same package that the naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre fits in. Basically, that big space we used for the bundle of snakes exhaust manifold, the turbo is in that space too. They’re all packaged to occupy the same space,” Coleman told Car Advice.
Currently, the most potent engine of the 3 and 6 models only pumps out 185 hp and the fact that the CX-9’s engine fits into the 3 has sparked hopes that the Mazda 3 MPS could make a comeback.
While the prospect is certainly intriguing, Coleman confirmed that it’s up to Mazda’s product planners to decide what models receive the new engine, not him.
