Thanks to a very successful year, Mercedes has moved even closer to passing BMW in terms of global sales for the first time since 2005.
During the first six months of 2016, BMW global deliveries went up by 5.8% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 986,557. Mercedes, on the other hand, saw their deliveries increase by 12% to just over 1 million, leaving BMW trailing by 20,062 units, followed by Audi in third place.
This remains however a three horse race, since Audi also claimed that it wants to become No.1 in terms of luxury car sales and if we ignore the growth and just focus on volume, it’s hard to name a winner for the year just yet.
Last month alone, BMW delivered 189,097 cars (a 9.7% increase), as demand went up for the 2-Series as well as the automaker’s SUV lineup, as reported by Autonews. Also propelled by surging SUV demand was Mercedes’ 11% jump to 188,444 units, while Audi pulled off a 7.4% jump with 169,000 deliveries.
All three brands are expected to launch several new products and technologies in the near future, with electric cars and connected services at the forefront.
