It is no secret that Toyota is developing a new-generation Supra in cooperation with BMW as part of a two-car sports car program, one for each.
While the car has been years in development, very few details about it are known, particularly its powertrain. Some speculation has suggested that Toyota’s side of the project could adopt some form of hybridization and an engine built by BMW .
Now, however, Japanese publications claim the new Supra will instead utilize a twin-turbocharged V6 developed by Toyota itself. Mag-X and Car Keys report that Toyota is working on its first ever twin-turbo V6 engine for use in the next Lexus GS and LS and that this engine could be shoehorned into the new Supra, delivering over 400 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
As with all reports surrounding the new Supra and BMW‘s Z4 replacement, it’s worth taking these rumors with a grain of salt. It was just last week that undisclosed sources said the new Supra would have an engine and electric motors from BMW driving all four wheels, a powertrain dramatically different to the more traditional twin-turbo V6 Toyota is working on.
Whatever the case may be, we should see the new Supra sometime in 2018.
