General Motors is conducting a new safety campaign on vehicles that may be equipped with defective electronic park lock levers.
The recall focuses on 7,620 units in the United States that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), could allow drivers to remove the ignition keys without them being in Park mode, leading to possible rollaway and increasing the risk of injury for occupants and bystanders.
Supplied by Alps Electronic, the defective components were fitted to certain 2011 Buick Regal, 2013 Encore, 2013-2014 Verano, 2016-2017 Verano, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox, 2013-2015 Malibu, 2011-2016 Cruze, 2016 Malibu and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain. Owners of these models will be notified by General Motors and, as usual, dealers will inspect them and see if the key cylinder lock housing needs to be replaced. If so, the operation will be made free of charge.
General Motors has not provided a notification schedule yet, but owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Buick at 1-800-521-7300 and GMC at 1-800-462-8782 if they have questions on the subject. Moreover, the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline can also be reached at 1-888-327-4236, but make sure you ask about campaign number 16V502000.
