The usual Dacia Logan and Volkswagen Polo police cruisers on the roads of Romania will be joined by a brand new BMW i3, which will be put to the test by the country’s authorities.
This is the first of its kind to make its way into the local law enforcement’s lineup and the version that has been chosen uses a small internal combustion engine that acts as a range extender.
Despite featuring the blue and silver police graphics, warning lights and all the necessary equipment to help it patrol the streets, it will be used for just a month by the Bucharest traffic police, so residents and tourists traveling to the Eastern European country during this period have been challenged by the authorities to “Find the Pokemon“, which is the nickname given to the i3.
The Romanian police force is now on the long list of European countries that use a BMW i3 in their daily law enforcement duties, along with the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, where one of the four electric hatchback was recently engulfed by flames. The biggest fleet order, however, came from overseas, in the US, where the Los Angeles Police Department will acquire 100 examples, after favoring the i3 instead of the more powerful and expensive Tesla Model S.
