Understeer is the killer of all fun. Unlike oversteer which is generally quite fun even if unintentional and unexpected, its evil sibling does nothing but suck the fun out of driving. With the right skills however, overcoming understeer is quite easy.

Front-wheel drive cars are particularly prone to this phenomenon whereby the front wheels lose traction and push along the road no matter how much steering input is made. While many drivers try to overcome this with additional steering lock, that is in fact the last thing you want to do as demonstrated by Randy Pobst in the following clip.

As the racing driver points out, curing understeer can be done either through the brake pedal or accelerator. Simply letting off the gas can help rectify the issue while in more extreme cases, a quick tap on the brake pedal can be enough to load up the front tyres and stop them from skidding.

Performing massive drifts sure can be entertaining, but properly controlling understeer brings with it its own unique sense of satisfaction.
