Every year sees hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of classic cars go under the hammer during Monterey Car Week. And this year’s was no exception. In fact Gooding & Company alone moved nearly $130 million in vintage metal at the official Pebble Beach Auctions, setting a new two-day record for the company.
Of the 115 lots it sold over the weekend, 26 topped the million-dollar mark, including four that sold for over $10 million. Chief among them was a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione, which went for $18,150,000.
It was joined by another 250 Competizione – a 1960 SWB Berlinetta – that sold for $13.5 million, a 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza ($12m), and a 1932 Bugatti Type 55 Roadster ($10.4m). The latter set a record for the highest price ever paid for a Bugatti at auction, bearing in mind that some of the most valuable examples tend to trade hands privately.
Other highlights included the 1979 Porsche 935 that Paul Newman drove at Le Mans, which sold for over $4.8 million. A 1957 Maserati A6G/54 sold for $3.3 million, a 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Spider by Bertone went for over $3 million, and a 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Runabout went for over $2 million.
