That BMW is working on a new 5 Series should come as no surprise. We’ve seen several prototypes undergoing testing, after all, and BMW itself even gave us a taste of things to come with its optical scanning system. And now it’s teasing us yet again with another new piece of technology.

The next-gen 5 Series is set to incorporate a new feature called Remote 3D View. The automaker isn’t telling us much about it at the moment, but it would appear to utilize the vehicle’s on-board cameras to display a virtual overhead view of the car and its surroundings – even remotely via a smartphone app.

More than that we couldn’t tell you at the moment, but the teaser follows a familiar pattern. When BMW was preparing to roll out the new 7 Series, it offered a similar advanced look – using the same spokesperson – by way of its remote parking feature. We wouldn’t be surprised, then, to see more of the next Fiver’s tech previewed in similar teasers ahead of the vehicle’s debut, which we might expect to take place at the Paris Auto Salon in a month from now.

The current 5 Series was introduced back in 2010, making it one of the older entries in a highly competitive market segment. The Acura RLX, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF, Lexus GS, Maserati Ghibli, Mercedes E-Class and Volvo S90 are all newer than the Bimmer. The current Audi A6 was introduced later the same year, leaving only the Infiniti Q70 (introduced as the M in 2009) as the senior member of the group.
