The FIA has pulled the pin on the World Rally Championship’s Rally China round citing severe weather damage.
Originally intended to be held from September 8-11, the area near Beijing where the rally was to be staged has been battered by torrential storms and flooding in the last month, causing irreversible damage to the prescribed rally route and leaving organizers with no choice but to cancel the whole event.
While the FIA, WRC Promoter and the region’s Road Administration Authority inspected the affected stages, it was concluded that it would take too long to repair the course.
Weather conditions in the region around Huairou have been so severe that tens of thousands of locals have been forced to evacuate their homes for safety in the north of the country.
After the first eight rounds of the 2016 WRC season, Volkswagen Motorsport is sweeping the top 3 placings with Sebastien Ogier leading the way ahead of Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala.
