The next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class and its family of SUVs are set to benefit from the increased use of aluminum, says Automotive News.

With the current C-Class sedan, the German firm began using advanced joining processes allowing aluminum to be used more extensively, helping to reduce the vehicle’s weight therefore improving fuel efficiency and lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

While speaking at a seminar in the States recently, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International chief executive Jason Hoff said that the company’s new SUVs produced at its Alabama plant will shed weight thanks to more aluminum elements and the implementation of additional laser welding, riveting and bonding.

Further details haven’t been released but beyond the material being used comprehensively in the chassis, additional aluminum body panels can be expected.
