Tesla is working on a selection of mechanical upgrades for its models as it prepares to launch Autopilot 2.0.
The electric automaker’s Autopilot system was introduced in September 2014 with a front-facing camera, a front-racing radar and a 360-degree ultrasonic sensor. Since then, the system has been updated over-the-air to offer Autosteer and Autopark functions but in order for Teslas to become fully autonomous, some mechanical changes have to be done.
Electrek reports that the second version of Autopilot will require additional radars around the vehicle, possibly one at each corner, and also a triple camera system pointing out from the front.
It is not yet known when Autopilot 2.0 will be introduced but it will be some way off as the new sensors have yet to be added to production vehicles. Even when Tesla begins installing the additional cameras and radars, it will likely be a few months before it begins the over-the-air roll-out of the improved software.
It is reported that with the new cameras and radars, Tesla will achieve Level 3 autonomous driving and in the future, could reach level 4 (complete autonomy) solely through software updates.
