There’s no doubt that the Peugeot 205 GTI is an extremely important model for Peugeot and a legend in the segment, but is it really worth more than a modern 208 GTI?
It depends. Practically, the classic hot hatch, with its basic design and lack of technology that could steal away some of the pure driving pleasure, cannot be compared to the much safer, in every respect, modern car.
A lot of people think it’s much more fun, though, and one of them paid £30,938 ($40,427) for an example in pristine condition. Sold by SilverstoneAuctions at the Classic Sale 2016, this 205 GTi was manufactured in 1989 and bought by its initial owner with the intention of being used on a regular basis.
However, shortly after the purchase, his employer provided him with a new car every 4 years, so the Pug was used occasionally during the summer.
From June 2004 until February 2012 it was kept in storage, but during this period, it was regularly started and driven shortly to make sure that the engine and transmission don’t suffer any damage. Its odometer indicates 7,986 miles (12,852 km), the paintwork is original and so is the interior: “The vehicle looks, drives and smells as close to new as you would find. In other words, it is as close as you would ever get to being able to walk into a Peugeot dealership in 2016 and purchase a brand new model of what is generally recognized as being the best hot hatch ever built“, the vendor said.
