Customers can now order the VW Tiguan in its most powerful versions, either a 236hp biturbo TDI or a 217hp TSI.

Both engines come with the company’s 4Motion all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as standard.

The twin-turbo 2.0-litre BiTDI direct-injection engine is the most powerful diesel unit in the segment offering 236hp (240PS) and 368lb ft (500Nm) of torque between 1,750 and 2,500rpm. The top TDI version of the Tiguan is now capable of a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 141mph (228km/h).

Fuel economy is rated at a combined 44.1mpg UK (6.4lt/100km) on the EU cycle while CO2 emissions are 167g/km. To make the most powerful Tiguan easier to distinguish from its lesser brothers, VW has added a pair of trapezoidal tail pipes.

As for the petrol unit, this is derived straight from the Golf GTI and is no other but the 2.0-litre TSI making 217hp (220PS) and 258lb ft (350Nm) of torque. Performance remains quite brisk, with 0-62mph (0-100km/h) coming also in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 136mph (220km/h).

Prices in Germany start from 42,700 euros ($48k in current exchange rates) for the Tiguan BiTDI and 39,625 euros ($44,500 in current exchange rates) for the Tiguan 2.0 TSI, with the order books now open.
