Redesigned for the 2016 MY and arriving with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) engineers as a 2017 MY, the Chevrolet Volt has qualified for a Top Safety Pick+.
GM’s zero-emission car has earned good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints.
The IIHS’ technicians have noticed an improvement in the first crashworthiness test, over the previous generation, where the newer model had less intrusion into the occupant space and has changed the ‘acceptable’ rating for a ‘good’ one.
When equipped with the optional Front Automatic Braking and Low-Speed Front Automatic Braking, the 2017 Chevrolet Volt has scored a superior rating for the front crash prevention.
In the Institute’s track tests, it managed to avoid collisions at 12 mph (19 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h), while the vehicle equipped only with the low-speed system has avoided collision at 12 mph (19 km/h) and the impact speed was reduced by 5 mph (8 km/h) in the 25 mph (40 km/h) test.
The system also includes a forward collision warning, which meets the National Highway Traffic Safety’s (NHTSA) criteria.
