While the glory days of naturally-aspirated cars from BMW‘s M division are long gone, the company continues to make some of the best driver’s cars on the market, thanks in part to its commitment to the manual transmission.
But given the choice between the firm’s most focused three road models, the M2, the M4 and the almighty M4 GTS, which would you choose?
Carfection set about answering that question in the only way possible, by taking all three to a racetrack and testing them back-to-back.
On paper, the M4 GTS is the daddy of the trio. Its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder has 493hp (500PS) on tap and when combined with an array of aero parts, lightweight wheels, adjustable suspension and beefed up brakes, it can give more expensive supercars a run for their money.
The M2 and M4 on the other hand are cut from a different cloth, more focused on road use than being punished on a circuit. Both have a 3.0-liter straight-six engine but the M2 makes do with 370PS (365hp) while the M4 with 431PS (425hp). This results in a power gap of 60hp but the M2 is lighter and smaller meaning it can be just as fun as its big brother.
