Basically a sister model to the second generation X1, the Concept X2 previews a production crossover.
Unveiled at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, in a world premiere, it adopts a different design language compared to what we’re used to, and it is described as “a vehicle for active people looking for a combination of enjoyment and practicality“, according to the brand’s Senior VP, Adrian van Hooydonk.
At the front, the signature ‘kidney’ grille is flanked by the angular laser light headlamps with futuristic graphics, which sit above the aggressive bumper with wide side air intakes. The raked windscreen, lower roofline, and the lack for regular door handles dominate the profile, while at the rear, the study has a more angled tailgate than the one found on the X1, a prominent spoiler, new taillights and double exhaust pipes. Giving it a more hairy-chested look is the plastic cladding, found all around, along with the 21-inch wheels wrapped in treaded tires.
As expected, many of these radical design features will be toned down once the concept hits the assembly line under the X2 moniker, probably in 2017 or 2018, but the five-door layout and sloping roofline will be retained. It will be underpinned by the same architecture as the X1, meaning that FWD will be standard and xDrive AWD will be found on better equipped versions; power should come from the usual assortment of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
