The appeal of the Caterham Seven is just how basic it is. The iconic design, you might say, is boiled down to its building blocks. But now Caterham is taking that idea a step further with a new Lego set.
The latest crowd-sourced design from the famous Danish toy company replicates the Caterham 620R – one of the most hardcore iterations of Colin Chapman’s original design to date.
The proposal was submitted through the Lego Ideas platform by one Carl Greatrix and garnered the 10,000 votes necessary to put it into production and onto shelves at toy stores around the world.
Now revealed in its final form, the kit is made up of more than 770 pieces and includes a removable nose cone, removable engine cover, opening trunk, detailed engine… even axle stands that allow the assembled model to be displayed with its wheels off. Once completed, the Lego 620R measures 11 inches long and four inches tall, and comes in yellow with black racing stripes. It’ll be available in the UK come October 1 for £69 (or about $91).
This marks the first time a Caterham has been immortalized in Lego form, following the DeLorean time machine from Back To The Future and the ’59 Cadillac Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. The Lamborghini Veneno recently received 10,000 votes and is currently being evaluated for production, while the Land Rover Defender, 2017 Ford GT, classic Fiat 500, and Volkswagen Karmann Ghia are all in the voting stage and are picking up steam.
