Ford president and chief executive Mark Fields has hit back at Donald Trump’s claims that the company will fire all of its employees in the U.S.

America’s Republic presidential candidate made the comments on Thursday after Ford confirmed that in the next two to three years, all of its U.S. small car production will be shifted to Mexico.

While Trump denounced the plans, Fields hit back in an interview with CNN confirming that no U.S. jobs will be lost as production of the Focus and C-Max shift from Michigan to Mexico.

“It’s really unfortunate when politics get in the way of the facts. Ford’s investment in the U.S. and commitment to American jobs has never been stronger,” said Fields.

Since Ford revealed its plan, Trump has said that if he is elected, the government will impose a tariff of up to 35 per cent on any Mexican-built Ford vehicles which are imported into the United States, in an attempt to force the company to continue small car production in the U.S.

Fields hasn’t said if such a tax would make the company reconsider its decision saying “There’s lots of hypotheticals. We have to run our business on what we know today.”
