Crossover coupes are gaining popularity, especially among German automakers. BMW and Mercedes each offer sport-utes with tapering rooflines, and Audi is expected to follow suit. Porsche may or may not jump on the decidedly unaccommodating bandwagon, but if it does, this is likely what it would look like.

Rendered by Remco Meulendijk of RM CarDesign, these speculative images depict a potential Cayenne Coupe. Of course, like the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe with which it would compete, it still features four doors (plus the liftgate), but the roofline slopes towards the back to prioritize the sport at the expense of utility in this vehicle.

If built, the Cayenne coupe’s engine lineup would likely mirror the existing version’s fairly closely. On a global basis, that includes turbocharged and naturally aspirated V6 and V8 gasoline engines ranging from 300 to 560 horsepower, as well as diesel and plug-in hybrid versions.

Though the 911 comes in coupe, convertible and Targa variants, the other members of the Porsche lineup – including the Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, Boxster, Cayman and 918 – have to date only been offered in one bodystyle. (The same goes for the VW Touareg, Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga, with which the Cayenne has shared its platform.) Porsche will break with that tradition, however, when it launches the Panamera Sport Turismo wagon, and given the success its rivals have found in the segment, the Cayenne could be next.
