Larger And Lighter Volkswagen Polo Coming Next Year

There’s a new-gen Polo coming our way and all things point to be being more interesting than ever.

Coming as a replacement for the Mk5, which was introduced in 2009 and facelifted five years later, the German supermini will be much larger, according to a report published by AutoPista, adding 20 cm to its total length.

We’re taking this info with a pinch of salt, because if the data turns out to be correct, then the next-gen Polo will stand at roughly 4.17 meters long, significantly more than the Golf Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 and even Mk4, as the latter currently sits at 4.15 meters long.

Underpinned by the MQB platform, which is used by numerous models made under the close watch of the Volkswagen Group, the 2018 Polo is believed to drop about 70 kg (154 lbs) from its total weight.

The engine lineup will apparently kick off with a 1.0-liter TSI rated at 70 PS (69 HP) and will also include a new 1.5-liter TDI diesel, which will replace the 1.6-liter TDI. Chances are the small hatch will add a plug-in hybrid version too, while the most potent member of the family, the Polo GTI, will apparently be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit, developing approximately 200 PS (197 HP).

An adaptive suspension with electric control is expected to be found on the options list, while inside, the subcompact model should add a digital instrument cluster and a fresh infotainment system.

Volkswagen has yet to release the official reveal date, but we could expect the next-gen Polo at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
