A longtime dominant force in the Scadinavian Touring Car Championship, Volvo and Polestar managed to extend their winning ways to the international area this weekend, claiming their first checkered flag in the World Touring Car Championship.
Three-time STCC champ Thed Björk pulled off a command performance at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday, starting from sixth place and fighting his way up the grid until he caught race leader Norbert Michelisz (Honda) with just three laps to go.
Björk finally made it past on the second-to-last corner of the last lap, damaging his suspension but making it across the finish line to claim not only his first win in the series, but Volvo’s and Polestar Cyan Racing’s as well, since stepping up to the global series this season.
As if that wasn’t cause enough to celebrate, Richard Göransson also claimed the fourth consecutive title for Volvo and Polestar Cyan Racing in the Scandinavian championship on Saturday. The manufacturer and its racing team have positively dominated the STCC since its inception in 2010, winning the first and all but two of the titles so far.
The last three were won by Björk before he stepped up to the international series. Volvo has also won races in the Swedish, European, and British touring car championships, as well as Australia’s V8 Supercars series, Germany’s DTM, and America’s Pirelli World Challenge series.
