At a time where just about all midsize premium saloons excel in most areas, Volvo’s S90 still manages to impress.

If you’re considering the S90 as your next purchase, Carwow’s Mat Watson might be first to point out that there are a lot of competitors for it, on just about every continent.

Generally speaking though, if you’re Volvo, you mostly need to worry about a certain German trio (BMW 5-Series/Audi A6/Mercedes E-Class) and throw in the battle-hardened Jaguar XF for good measure. Even with such formidable rivals, the S90 shines thanks to its exterior design, high quality interior and really comfortable ride.

The car tested here is the D4 version, which comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel good for 190 PS and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. In a straight line, it will get you from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.2 seconds while averaging as little as 4.3 lt/100km (54.7 US mpg) – as long as you don’t nail the right pedal to the metal too often.

In the end, it seems the Volvo S90 again ticks just about every possible box, except for the one that says “as sporty as a 5-Series.”
