The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced an investigation into claims about 2010 Ford Fusion power steering failures.
Two years ago, the NHTSA opened a similar inquiry into power steering problems related to 2010-2012 Ford Fusion models. This ultimately led to the recall of the car but interestingly, 2010 models were excluded from the recall, reports Left Lane News.
Fast forward to 2016 and the NHTSA has received at least 527 complaints that claim the electric power steering of 2010 Fusion models suddenly failed. Of the complaints, a dozen assert that the failure led to accidents, three of which included injuries.
In a statement, the NHTSA said “Due to an increased number of complaints on the 2010 Fusion, ODI has opened this investigation to further analyze the scope, frequency and consequence of the alleged incidents.”
If a recall is issued for 2010 models, the fix could be the same as it was for 2011 and 2012 models meaning the steering gear may have to be replaced.
