At long last, Chevy’s engineers have peeled off the black vinyl covers, allowing us a much clearer view of the front end of the upcoming Corvette ZR1.
Aggressive doesn’t even begin to describe it, as the new bumper with lip spoiler and the bulge on the hood that’s surrounded by substantial air vents bring to mind a race car rather than something that’s actually street legal.
The larger rims and huge rear wing emphasize this effect and should provide the necessary downforce to keep the ZR1’s power at check at high speeds. A second prototype, with a much smaller wing, is also present, which suggests that the development team might not have settled on this issue. There’s also been talk of an active arrangement, though that seems a bit far-fetched.
Although there’s no solid info yet, the ZR1, which is expected to be the swansong of the current Corvette Stingray, will pack in excess of 700 HP, with some sources reporting an 750 HP output! This should come from either a tuned version of the existing supercharged 6.2-liter V8, or a new twin-turbo V8 tentatively named LT5.
Considering how formidable the Z06 is, the ZR1 should be quite a weapon. If the reports turn out to be true, we won’t have to wait long to find out, as its debut is very likely to be made at January’s 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
