This is the upcoming BMW 6-Series GT, and if you’re wondering why this is called a 6-Series, well, it’s because the Bavarian company has reportedly decided to replace both the existing 5-Series GT and the slow-selling 6-Series Gran Coupe with this one.
Despite the camouflage wrap, you can make out the shape of the new model to be more GT than Gran Coupe; the five-door body though looks much more acceptable than the existing one.
We still have no official information on what will happen to the sexy 6-Series Gran Coupe – perhaps BMW will continue the four-door coupe genre with the 8-Series. If the rumors prove to be true and BMW does pull the plug, the new 6-Series GT will be positioned higher in the market than the current 5-Series GT to cover the gap.
Based on the G30 5-Series, the future 6-Series GT will benefit from similar weight savings thanks to the CLAR (Cluster Architecture) modular platform and bear the same technologies with its four-door sibling. These will include the semi-autonomous functions and the plug-in powertrains.
The rest of the engine range will mirror that of the new regular 5-Series, bar the M-version of course. An M-Sport version though will be offered. The new 6-Series GT is expected to debut in 2017 possibly in Geneva while its market launch to take place towards the end of the same year.
