If you’re interested in more than just the latest high-tech features and in need of a fast diesel-powered BMW luxury limousine, choosing between the 730d, 740d and 750d is what it will ultimately come down to.
Fair warning though, despite this being a very interesting comparison, in reality these acceleration times can be influenced by several factors and to make matters worse, the 750d model is the long-wheelbase version, whereas the other two are regular models.
Still, there’s a considerable difference in power here, so naturally we’re curious to see how they compare under heavy acceleration at low to medium speed, as well as when maxed-out on the Autobahn.
To recap, we’ve got the BMW 730d xDrive lined up against the 740d xDrive and the 750Ld xDrive.
The 730d xDrive boasts 265 PS and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque coming from its 3.0-liter straight-six unit, for a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 5.8 seconds. The more powerful 740d, on the other hand, is good for 320 PS, 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque and will hit the same 100 km/h (62 mph) mark in 5.2 seconds. It’s a decent difference, one that you’ll see will grow as they both start to climb higher towards their identical top speed.
Now, the bigger 750Ld is, of course, a lot more impressive on paper thanks to its quad-turbocharged version of that the 3.0-liter straight-six. It’s got 400 PS, 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) of torque, and a manufacturer claimed 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of just 4.7 seconds.
How they all perform in an all-out acceleration test will be revealed towards the end of the clip.
