Next year, the FIA-supported Electric GT championship will kick off with a grid filled exclusively by modified Tesla Model S P85+s.
Before the championship calendar is announced, the series has been previewed in a short video showing one of the first modified Model S’s on the track.
As the racers are based around the Model S P85+, they feature the same 416 hp electric motor driving the rear wheels as the road car. However, from there things start to differ as the Electric GT competitors adopt bespoke body work that includes flared wheel arches, numerous aerodynamic elements including a large rear wing and, in dry conditions, Pirelli P Zero slicks.
Additionally, bespoke suspension and braking components will ensure the cars can handle the rigors of circuit racing, not simply the drag strip.
Inside, the racing Tesla features a totally stripped out interior free of any unnecessary creature comforts. All that can be seen is carbon fiber, a roll cage, a driver’s seat, fire extinguisher and, interestingly, the same massive touchscreen as the road car.
