If you believe the previous-generation F10 5-Series was being kept in check by the likes of the Audi A6, Jaguar XF and the all-new E-Class, it seems BMW‘s bouncing back the right way with their new mid-size executive saloon.

According to Auto Express editor James Disdale, the F10 5-Series was getting left behind and this new generation G30 model has just the right tools to overtake the Audi and the Jaguar, while putting up a good fight against the Mercedes.

In fact, Disdale goes as far as to say that the G30’s cabin is better than the one in the E-Class in terms of quality and that on the road, the Bimmer feels smaller than it really is and therefor more fun to drive than its rivals – or at least on equal terms with the Jaguar XF.

What really surprised him though was just how quiet the new 5-Series was on the road, both on the move as well as at idle. BMW really put a lot of effort into making the all-new 5er feel like a more expensive car, a truly smaller version of their 7-Series flagship.

Judging by every review we’ve seen so far, they might have done just that and succeeded at placing the 5-Series atop the mid-size executive saloon segment.

Of course, if you care a lot about looks, that’s one department where the G30 5-Series doesn’t exactly shock you with innovation.
