Connectivity might enable hackers to gain easier access to your car, but it works both ways, as a carjacker found out recently.
According to bmwblog, Seattle police was able to apprehend a person who stole a 550i last Sunday morning by calling on BMW, who remotely locked him inside the vehicle until the officers arrived.
When the owner realized that his car had been stole, he alerted the police, which turned to BMW for help. Even though they won’t offer specifics, the company does offer a call center to remotely open or lock the doors as needed via the ConnectedDrive system, which is what we presume they did.
The offender was found asleep in the car and, even though he tried to drive away, he was eventually arrested and now faces auto theft and drug possession charges.
Like we said, modern tech cuts both ways and, in this case, it worked in favor of the good guys and not the criminal.
