Four-seat convertibles aren’t as popular as they used to be. Once a highly competitive market segment, only a few automakers are still in the game at this point. But maybe Skoda should consider giving it a go.
These latest renderings from our man Theo Chin envision what an Octavia-based cabriolet would look like. And we have to admit that it doesn’t look half bad – like an Audi, almost.
Skoda’s German counterpart is one of those few still making this type of drop-top, its A3 and A5 cabrios competing with the likes of the Mercedes C-Class and E-Class and BMW 2 Series and 4 Series convertibles. This after the Infiniti G37, Lexus IS, Volvo C70, and Saab 9-3 convertibles have all gone the way of the dodo.
Down at the more accessible end of the market, Skoda’s parent Volkswagen discontinued the Eos, Toyota the Camry Solara, and Chrysler the 200 Convertible, leaving the Opel/Buick Cascada as one of the few entries in the market that isn’t based on a muscle car like the Chevy Camaro or Ford Mustang.
Will Skoda build this, then? Probably not. It took it this long to launch the Kodiaq as its first proper SUV, after all. But if it did, it would probably look something like this.
