Former Volvo senior director of engineering, Anders Bell, is joining Tesla in an equivalent role this month.

The former head of interior engineering confirmed the move on his LinkedIn profile over the weekend, as reported by Electrek.

Bell spent his entire career at Volvo, leading all interior engineering from concept development and design to launch for the past two years. He was actually the man behind the interior of the Volvo S60L from 2015, as well as the SPA cross carline front seat system launched on the Volvo XC90 last year.

Before being promoted to an executive position, Bell did a 4-year stint in China where he built the interior and climate engineering department of ‘Volvo Cars China’ while overseeing the launch of the XC60 SUV.

With Tesla, Bell will need to work towards improving interior quality to match what people generally expect from a premium product. As good as Tesla interiors have been ever since the Model S first came out, they’ve always been a step behind Mercedes/BMW/Audi cabins.

As of right now, it’s unclear whether or not Bell will make any changes to the Model 3 interior, or if he’ll simply use his expertise for other future Tesla products.
