A very special McLaren 720S is set to make an appearance at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed, one that’s made out of bright orange LEGO bricks instead of aluminum and carbon fiber.
This will obviously be a much bigger project than the £12.99 LEGO Speed Champions McLaren 720S miniature car, although what makes the 1:1 model even more interesting is that it will arrive at the Goodwood stand incomplete.
This will allow visitors to actually finish the build by placing orange bricks in designated parts of the car. McLaren does need to have the thing ready by the end of the event, on July 2nd – that being the only deadline.
McLaren needed over 267,300 LEGO bricks just to prep the car in time for Goodwood. There, fans are expected to add another 12,700+ in order to completely finish the project. In the end, the car is expected to weigh no fewer than 1.6 tons (3,527 lbs), which is considerably more than what a road-going 720S weighs.
This 1:1 scale model was built around a steel frame, with a team of six people working for over 2,000 hours in order to finish the car by hand – as opposed to the 12 working days needed in order to build the real thing.
The LEGO car will also feature the all-new Pirelli P Zero CORSA tire, complete with silver ‘Pirelli Color Edition’ graphics, making it a lot more realistic than the miniature 720S revealed back in April.
